The Democratic Republic of Congo faces a crisis of poverty and oppression today, while at the same time it contains all the necessary resources to alleviate poverty and to sustain economic growth.

The mission of the Campaign for Democracy in Congo (CDC), which is a non-profit organisation, is to participate in the reconstruction of the Democratic Republic of Congo by establishing a real and sincere partnership between that country and the Republic of Ireland.

Objectives

The objective of Campaign for Democracy in Congo (CDC) is to establish a sincere and lasting partnership between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ireland in the following areas:

Human Rights and Democracy

-        Inform international society about all efforts and threats to the democratic process in DRC, through all appropriate channels

-        Alert international human rights organisations, both inter and non-governmental, to possible human rights abuses in DRC, and provide support for human rights education and training efforts in the country.

-        Help with the transformation of Congolese society from conflict to peace, and ensure that all efforts are made to address the plight of displaced peoples, refugees and prisoners of conscience

-        Inform Irish people of the vision for a peaceful, democratic DRC, through conferences, workshops, and other appropriate fora

Health

-        Encourage and lobby  for the provision of aid from Ireland to the DRC, specifically for the repair of existing hospitals and medical centres, and the creation of new ones

-        Obtain assistance from Irish agencies and industry for the acquisition of medicines and other essential material for Congolese hospitals

-        Promote practices in alternative medicines and help provide psychotherapy to those who need it in DRC, with the help of practitioners in Ireland

-        Establish an effective and lasting partnership with Irish-based pharmaceutical firms, based on the exchange of medical products for raw material from DRC.

Education

-        Help and support the creation of education centres in DRC, through partnership with Ireland

-        Contribute to the supply of school equipment to the DRC, through the generosity of the Irish people

-        Help rehabilitate those children who are unsupported and forgotten in Congolese society, through the setup of technical and professional training centres in partnerships with the Irish aid agencies

-        Promote the teaching of English in DRC with the help of Irish resources and expertise

-        Encourage Irish participation in the building of the Congolese education system

-        Facilitate partnerships between Irish and Congolese schools and universities

Economic Development

-        Provide the necessary information for Irish and Congolese companies to avail of business opportunities of  mutual interest

-        Help with the training of Congolese business people, through partnerships with Irish consultants and mentors

-        Support community development projects obtain finance, through partnership with Irish Associations and through NGOs

-        Facilitate the partnership between the Irish and Congolese farming sectors 

Culture

-        Promote the work of Congolese artists in Ireland

-        Encourage support for Congolese musical groups performing in Ireland

-        Promote Congolese cuisine in Irish restaurants and bars
