StandWithCongo, in collaboration with SOS Congolese Youth and Campaign for Democracy in Congo (CDC) are presenting a free public screening of the award-winning documentary film When Elephants Fight at 5pm on Tuesday 8th November, 2016, at Room T1-17, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

"When Elephants Fight" is an eye opening film that captures the illicit mineral trade in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and shows how the complicity of multinational corporations and corrupt politicians threaten human rights globally and, perpetuate the deadliest conflict since World War II in the DRC. The film is narrated and produced by Golden Globe award winner, Robin Wright.

The film will be the flagship of an event to campaign for democracy in the DRC. There will also be a panel discussion featuring the President of SOS Congolese Youth, Maurice Kikangala; Campaign Coordinator of StandWithCongo, Garret Moore; President of Campaign for Democracy in Congo and lecturer at Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick, Dr. John Lannon; Lecturer at Mary Immaculate, Dr Patricia Kieran; Law and Human Rights Activist, Mrs Tracey Ratidzai Ohajunwa, and Director of Down to Basics Network (DoToBa), Ms. Catherine Mahoro.

President of SOS Congolese Youth, Maurice Kikangala, said, "You don't have to be in the Congo or be a Congolese to know about the extraordinary wealth the DRC has, but Congolese continue to live in abject and endless poverty. We have to put an end to this by holding to account politicians and multinationals who are engaged in relentless exploitation of Congo minerals. This event shows us how to do that, and we are thrilled that it is happening in Limerick."

The Director of StandWithCongo said he was excited that Limerick was hosting the first campus campaign in Ireland to demand and promote democracy in the DRC.

This is the first activist community in Ireland to lead the push for transparency in the extractive industries to ensure all such dealings in Congo meet international standards. The aims of the campaign are four fold:

  • Hold corporations that have bought mines in DRC worth billions from secretive companies in tax havens to disclose the beneficial owners of those offshore companies.
  • Uphold and promote that Congolese citizens have the right to know who profit(ed) from these deals.
  • That the DRC government should commit to: immediate full disclosure of state-owned companies' revenues and spending; publication of all mining contracts, and ensure company compliance with Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) standards on conflict minerals.
  • That the US government should take a stand on corruption and anonymous companies by supporting transparency of company beneficial ownership.

About #StandWithCongo

StandWithCongo is a US based human rights movement for transparency in Congo mining. Its team comprises filmmakers, political and policy experts, campus and community organisers and leaders in the media. The organisation utilises a multi-platform approach of campaigning to tackle the worst corruption in the DRC. The group drew out of the Congolese demand for transparency and a respect for strength of student movements. Among some of their aims, is their desire to sway policy makers and big mining corporations to create a transparent mining sector that fosters human rights and development. One of their successes is the production of the award-winning Congo documentary, "When Elephants Fight" and the launch of the campaign to deliver their film and actions to 50 campuses in 2016. The group is asking everyone to be involved in this campaign by organising a #Screening4Action that energises every student and administrator on campus to #StandWithCongo. They are asking everyone to SIGN and SHARE the petition so as to help the movement reach 50 campuses worldwide, and to create the leverage needed for change. (For more info: www.StandWithCongo.org)
