After years of conflict the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to live through a crisis of poverty and oppression, while at the same time it contains all the necessary resources to alleviate poverty and to sustain economic growth. A March 2013 BBC profile of the country described it as follows "A vast country with immense economic resources, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has been at the centre of what could be termed Africa's world war. This has left it in the grip of a humanitarian crisis. The five-year conflict pitted government forces, supported by Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe, against rebels backed by Uganda and Rwanda."

Approximately ths size of Western Europe, the DRC is an extremely wealthy country, rich in diamonds, gold, copper, cobalt and zinc. It has supplies of coltan, which is used in mobile phones and other electronic gadgets, and cassiterite, which is used in food packaging.

However this resource wealth has rarely been harnessed for the benefit of the Congolese people.

The Campaign for Democracy in Congo (CDC)'s mission is to help address the economic, social, policical and human rights crises that exist in the DRC. It does this by establishing and supporting real and sincere partnerships between the country and Ireland. There are many Congolese people living in Ireland, largely as a result of persecution and intimidation which has led them to seet refuge abroad. Together with Irish friends and supporters they are working to address the many challenges facing their country, as well as the challenges facing the Congolese communities in Ireland. CDC supports their efforts by connecting individuals and groups with opportunities, and by building upon existing relationships and networks.

The long term objective of CDC is to establish a sincere and lasting partnership between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ireland in five key areas. These are human rights and democracy; health; education; economic development; and culture.

Further information about CDC can be found here.
